Roztoka sits at 1,031 m — significantly lower than the major high-altitude shelters — in the valley below Morskie Oko, near the Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza waterfalls. It's the midpoint shelter on the popular Palenica–Morskie Oko route and the natural stop for those who find the full lake walk too long, or who want to break a multi-day hike at a lower elevation before continuing upward.

It's a smaller, quieter shelter than Morskie Oko or Murowaniec — less well-known, less crowded, and with a different character.

What to expect

Day visitors pass Roztoka on the way to the lake; overnight guests are typically serious Tatra hikers using it as a staging point. Who stays here: multi-day hikers breaking the journey between the valley and the high shelters, people who want a quieter night than Morskie Oko offers, and visitors who find the higher shelters fully booked.

The terrace area near the waterfalls is the main point of interest — the sound of the waterfalls provides a specific atmosphere that the higher shelters don't have.

⚠ Rules

Standard Tatra shelter customs apply.

Insider tips

If Morskie Oko shelter is fully booked for your dates and you want an eastern Tatras overnight, Roztoka is worth checking — it books out less quickly and is close enough to Morskie Oko that you can reach the lake for dawn before the day visitors arrive, then return down the valley at leisure.
