Day 1: Arrival, Krupówki, Oscypek

Afternoon

Arrive and check in. Explore Krupówki at a child's pace — the oscypek stalls, the horse carriages, the general sensory experience of a mountain resort street. Buy oscypek and let the children taste it. No agenda, no timetable.

Evening

Early dinner. Pierogi are universally liked, and a few places are set up properly for families rather than merely tolerating them: Gwarno at the foot of Gubałówka has a children's corner and a dedicated kids' menu; Restauracja Regionalna Nosalowy Dwór, Javorina, Toscana and Bistro Kryjówka all handle families well. For a meal that doubles as an activity, NABOO Ryba z Ognia at ul. Przewodników Tatrzańskich 1 does trout and has a rope park on site.

Day 2: Gubałówka

Morning

The Gubałówka funicular. For children under 10, the ride itself is often the highlight of the day — 3.5 minutes, a dramatic view, vendors at the top; in winter, the toboggan run is the centrepiece. Walk the ridge promenade for 30 minutes, without pushing further than interest sustains, and be back down by midday.

Afternoon

The Tatra Museum, specifically the natural history section — school-age children engage well with the Tatra fauna display and geological models. An hour is enough for younger children.

Day 3: Dolina Kościeliska

Morning

An early start for the best family hike in the Tatras. Transport to Kiry at 7:30am, then walk the valley from 8:00am to 1:00pm. The limestone gorge section holds children's attention well — the stream, the cave (Smocza Jama), the scale of the rock walls. At the Ornak shelter (8 km): soup and hot chocolate. Return at a child's pace.

Afternoon

Rest.

Day 4: Thermal Baths

Afternoon

A dedicated thermal day. Termy Bukowina is the right choice for families — the best children's infrastructure of the four complexes. Spend 3–5 hours at the complex, with lunch on site and the afternoon in the outdoor pools.

Day 5: Morskie Oko (Age 6+)

Morning

The famous lake walk — appropriate for children who can sustain 18 km, or who can take the horse carriage for part of the return. Take the 6:30am bus from Zakopane. Strategy: walk up to the lake (9 km, 2.5–3 hours), spend 45 minutes at the lake and shelter, and take the horse carriage down for tired legs — back in Zakopane by early afternoon. For children under 6, skip this trail; the alternative is a morning at the flat, stream-walking lower section of Dolina Strążyska, close to town.

Day 6: Activity Choice by Age

Morning

Split the group if needed. For active older kids and teenagers: Rusinowa Polana — a moderate trail with an alpine meadow, sheep in summer, and a good panorama, taking 5–6 hours. For younger children: Aquapark Zakopane or horse-drawn carriage rides.

Afternoon

For all ages: a day trip to Chochołów village (30 km) — two hours walking the historic wooden village street, lunch in a local restaurant, and return. Low-effort, high character.

Day 7: Departure Morning

Morning

If departing by midday: a morning walk along Krupówki, a final oscypek purchase, and coffee.

Afternoon

If departing in the evening, use the half-day option instead: Sarnia Skała (2 hours from town, suitable for families with children 8+, with an excellent final view of Zakopane before leaving).

Travel tips

Strollers: central Zakopane is partially manageable, and the Kościeliska valley floor is stroller-accessible on its flat section, but mountain trails are not. Meals: pierogi, grilled chicken and bread are universally available — pack trail snacks and don't rely on mountain hut timing for hungry children. Medical: apteka (pharmacy) on Krupówki and surrounding streets; the hospital is Szpital Powiatowy, ul. Kamieniec 10. Adjust the whole week according to your children's ages — the trail options table in the Family Activities guide maps specific activities to age groups.

Modifications

A note on pacing: seven days is a very good length for a family trip on one condition — at least two of those days need to be light: a town-and-museum day, a thermal bath day, an easy valley walk. Don't schedule a full mountain outing every day; it's the fastest way to end a holiday with everyone tired and nobody enjoying it. Keep one day entirely in reserve for rain or for the day when someone simply can't face another early start — you will use it. Rainy day backups: for days 1–2, the Tatra Museum (full programme) or Villa Atma; for days 3–5, the thermal baths (indoor pools), the Witkacy Theatre (check schedule), or a day trip to Kraków; for day 6, the Tatra Museum, thermal baths, or a karczma lunch with an afternoon of games.
